Tracing is a mechanical action that allows the creation of flatness, fabricating the abstraction of a three-dimensional object by drawing its shadow. I had been drawing on paper the shapes of deflated balloons, when I started tracing and cutting them on pressed vinyl. This material, while providing a plastic, artificial skin-like quality similar to that of a balloon, was capable of registering the abstract flatness of my drawings. Thus, I made Transformation I: Balloon, where I animated the progressive inflation of a balloon in 150 different steps, following the action of tracing always the preceding cut-out.
